Élodie Pont

Growing up in Burgundy (France), Elodie started dancing, singing, playing the flute, acting, drawing, writing… in primary school. Not that her parents were artists, she simply loved experimenting all these forms of expression, creating, seeing how a story could be told using different art forms. Some say you don’t “have a dream”, the dream “has you”. Sometimes it comes to you like a recurring and compelling vision whether you will listen to it or not. And when you decide to follow it, you just know it’s right.

At first Elodie was not planning to become an artist, because “artist was not a job”. But in 2012, she found herself with a Communication degree in her pocket, a nice “real-life proof” resume but still unable to decide what kind of job she actually wanted to aim for.

That’s when she decided to enter a Musical Theatre school in Paris, to at least do something she knew she liked (singing, dancing and acting) and “see what comes after”. And then, because it felt righter than any other option, she decided artist might be a job after all. Not just “singer” or “actress”, artist. Creator, storyteller, emotion designer, life transcripter, inspiration channeler…

Since 2015 she’s been playing in French musical theatre productions (currently in “MARS 2037”, a spatial musical theatre show), worked in Disneyland Paris in 2019, has been part of the vintage pin-up group “The Satin Dollz”… and most of all co-created the a cappella female trio LES ITINÉRANTES in 2017. With a repertoire covering many styles, from medieval to modern music, in 30 different languages, the trio has a unique way of exploring the possibilities of female voices, erasing borders, creating stories and travels through their own arrangements and strong visuals…

“I’ve always been fascinated by how arts can be used to tell stories, share images, touch people’s heart… When I was a child, I wanted to change the world, to find ways to make humans more humans. I do believe art has such power when it comes from a sincere place. The power to open eyes, minds and hearts, to create links and bridges. This is what matters the most to me when I listen to a music, read a story, watch a painting… or create anything. Is it touching me?

The first time I heard ANÚNA, I was a teenager. I remember thinking: “Wait… what is this? It’s so different from what I know!”. The voice textures, the music itself, so simple (in a “not pretentious” way) and yet so beautiful. It was like someone got to the core of things, understood things from the world and put them into songs. I was deeply touched. Little did I know I would be writing an email to this “someone” a few years later, when LES ITINÉRANTES started singing his songs, or even less that I would myself be joining ANÚNA one day!

The trio has been in touch with Michael for a few years. We finally met him at the ANÚNA Winter School in Rotterdam in 2019 and he asked us to join the Spanish Tour in October 2021. Quite the adventure!

We love learning new things all the time, trying to understand how other singers, composers or ensembles work, their vision of music, of singing… It’s quite a challenge to know you are somehow representing a culture and tradition that isn’t yours, to be a French singer in an Irish ensemble. But that’s also what we usually do with the trio: we cannot completely embrace the other cultures but at least we try to understand and respect them. Not to mention that in the end, music has its special language that goes way beyond borders!”
